Husson Baseball Not Likely To Play... Yet

The Husson College baseball team is set to take on the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday, at home for a double header. Oh, thats right, theres still snow on the field. Husson has one of the premier baseball complexes in the Northeast with a fieldturf suface that generally stays a few degrees warmer than organic grass. The field, however, is still covered in an inch or two of snow, and the pitchers mound, uncovered yesterday, is not in the best shape.

"We uncovered it today and it was really soggy. Its so soggy we might not play unless it can be touched up or we can keep putting the qwiksand to it." Husson Junior infielder Billy Shannon said on Tuesday the 25th.

This is not only a blow to local baseball fans and the players, but it brings up the question: "What in the heck is the rest of the state going to do this spring?"

In the Presque Isle area of northern Maine, they have seen record smashing snow falls, great for the skiing and snowmobile industries, but they may not see green grass, especially on their baseball fields until the first of JUNE! It will be interesting to see what teams do as local teams here in Bangor as they can play games at Husson early on, where teams in the north, cannot.

I lived in Presque Isle for 14 years and, like everywhere in Maine, we would spend the first few weeks in the gym, as we did when I lived in the Augusta area attending Hall-Dale High School. My suggestion for the administration of schools in Aroostook is to get together, pull together some money and build an athletic bubble like the one at UMaine, but large enough for baseball in the geographic center of the schools in Aroostook County. This would eliminate every problem.

We live in Maine, and the season ends even after seniors have graduated, it is about time to get smart, and beat the elements.
